The problem with shooting long exposures for star movement on digital is the issue of long exposure noise which creates unpleasant marks through the image.
The way around it is to stack numerous exposures that have been taken consecutively. In this tutorial we go through the focus and exposure settings for each image. Then in photoshop we created two actions. The first to open and save all the files into a folder as Tiff images. Our next action is the main one as it will take those newly saved and blend them into each other to create the final image.
The action created can be used on as little as two images or 1000. The best thing about it is that is only keeps two images open at any one time so it doesn’t need a massive amount of computer memory to run.
We finish off the tutorial with a bit of post production to the image.
